The play, A Doll’s House, by Henrick Ibsen, is an interesting story because the audience can relate to the conflicts that confronted the character “Nora??In many ways, Nora reminds the audience of a typical mother; in that she ignored her own needs in order to tirelessly struggle to maintain her family’s health and well-being. In society today, one can find people who face similar personal challenges.

From the very beginning of the play, Nora hides the fact that she is re-paying a secret loan. She appears to spend money without any thought about tomorrow. She even tips the delivery boy. Nora buys gifts for everyone except herself and, when asked what she would like most, she says, “Give me money.?SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">?Actually, she is very frugal and is setting aside funds from her allowance to meet the regular payments on the loan. Nora has secretly borrowed money to take a trip with her husband to improve his health. Nora does not have any way to repay the money she borrowed and she does not have any collateral to offer against the debts incurred. In fact, she forged her deceased father’s name on the loan document.

Overall, that the character of Nora is similar to many women today, in that they frequently sacrifice themselves for their families.. Consequently, they often find themselves feeling that they do not have a life of their own. This can lead to an identity crisis similar to the one that Nora confronts.

Nora works exhaustively to make everyone around her happy, especially her, husband Torvald. He’s very practical and does not realize that she is not a spendthrift. He calls her this in the first act. He is completely fooled by her and completely surprised by her at the end.

This play holds the interest of the audience because it presents many basic values that people share today. Whether Nora is considered a courageous woman or as a mother who abandons her responsibilities is up to the audience to decide.
